Step UP! Party Materials

Step UP! Day has started!  It is an all day celebration.

Visit the Step UP! headquarters located on the Planet Mongo sim.  It is an awesome build and there will be a variety of live SL performances my musicians singing their own original songs.

We’ll have a combination of live SL musicians and SL musicians streamed on Indie Spectrum Radio playing throughout the day. Watch the Step Up! blog for details of how to grab the relevant streams!

We will have several hours from Indie Spectrum Radio. You can play it through their radios – see http://www.indiespectrum.com/ for details.

You can also get a range of materials for your party from XStreet SL – Textures and Information Packs to display!

And don’t forget your special Freddie Bleac Step UP! fireworks!

If you love art make sure you visit the Step UP! Art Gallery sim.  It’s a beautiful sim full of original artwork and educational pieces from SL’s most creative artists.

Join us for a day of solidarity and support of content creators.  We plan to have fun all day and all of you are welcome to join us.

Right from the start of Step UP! we have said that Step UP! Day will be November the 5th, and that to support Step UP! on that day no-one uploads anything to the grid, that people wear the Step UP! ribbon to show support, and that they hold or attend Step UP! parties to celebrate content creation.

Those are still our objectives.

We are NOT calling for a boycott of selling or buying – and we hope that people will continue to blog, plurk and twitter to let everyone know that it’s Step UP! Day!

There has been some confusion as another group, Artists’ Voice, IS calling for a 48 Hour boycott of uploads, selling, buying and blog posts – and several blogs and chats have confused the two campaigns.  We are delighted that there is such interest in opposing content theft, and we wish them well with their planned protest.

But we are not asking people supporting Step UP! to do anything more than we originally asked.  The objectives of Step UP! remain the same.

One of the things we want to do with the Step UP! campaign is to have the community come up with their own creative way to support the movement.  So I was really excited when Manis Lane of the mix and match- Boutique sent me the Step UP! bag she created.

Step UP Bag Final 4

It’s totally cute and perfect for Autumn and if people click on it while you’re wearing it they get all of the Step UP! info.  Smart!

Step UP Bag Final 2It can be re-sized and has one strap going across the front of the chest.

I placed it in the Fabulous Fashion studio so feel free to drop by and pick one up.  I can’t wait to see what other ideas people come up with.  Thanks Manis!

Wow!  A lot has gone down this week and I am really excited.  We have been working hard behind the scenes and the Step Up SL campaign for content theft awareness has officially started and the work has already begun to get the word out.  So many of you have been so supportive and are as excited as we are to get this going so let’s get to it people!

The Info Pack will be completed today and widely distributed (and will include the already famous orange ribbons that everyone is asking for)

What you can do RIGHT NOW, is join the Step UP! Ning group:

http://step-up-sl.ning.com/

We need people who are willing to help make Step UP! the most fantastic community event that Second Life has ever seen! Graphic artists, photographers, machinamists, writers, PR Gurus, Designers, Fashionistas all of you!

Please add Step Up! to your blog roll:  http://stepupsl.wordpress.com/

We have set up several Step Up! Teams that you can join within the Ning Group, so that you can use your talents to contribute in your own special way.  This will be a Collaborative effort across the entire grid. We will make a change, the time has come!

Last night I read about the malicious theft of several of Rebel Hope’s and RH Engels sims.  Another heartbreaking story with this one affecting the real life income of a family.  (As of this posting the Lindens came through and Rebel is happy to report that all stolen content from her shops were removed from SL).  Unfortunately this happens every day in SL, leaving content creators feeling frustrated, uninspired and angry.

Saffia of Prim Perfect wrote an inspiring post on content theft and she is absolutely right.  It is time for a massive campaign to educate residents on all aspects of content theft.  There needs to be a universal understanding within SL that theft will not be tolerated on any level, and that the content creators of SL are to be respected for the work that they do and the time that they devote to making SL the beautiful place that it is.

There are a lot of people that enter SL thinking that it is just a ‘game’ and they don’t understand that everything they do, click on or wear in SL is created by someone who put in a tremendous amount of effort and time.  So the education needs to literally start as soon as they enter through the gates of SL registration.  The standard needs to be set AT THE DOOR.  It needs to be immediately understood that there are consequences to be paid for stealing or passing around stolen work.

There are a lot of people in SL who are so good at so many things and we can use the creative and technical talents that we all have to get the message out there.

Here are some ideas that can be done on a massive scale throughout SL:

*Interactive posters in all stores, high traffic areas, and portals giving people information and directing them to websites that give information on content theft.

*Information Kiosks that people can subscribe to that send out updates on the campaign.

*Public Service Announcements, via magazine ads, radio, virtual television and youtube that can be given out to shops and places of business.  PSA’s with visual impact, plenty of machinima geniuses in SL that can do this. These PSA’s can be played anywhere or run like an ad spot.

*WANTED posters. Outing thieves and those who conspire with them.  Their names, the names of their alts and the crimes they commit needs to go onto WANTED posters outing them to all shoppers and residents. Anyone good with graphic skills out there can create this or make a template that can be passed around and used by shop owners and blog owners.

*Video Tutorials on how to spot and report content theft. What to look for and how to tell if what you have in your inventory is stolen.  Visually break down the reporting process to residents that don’t know how.

*An incentive to residents who turn in thieves and stolen goods. Just like RL, you turn in a thief you get a reward!

*An inworld Hotline. There has to be a way for people who are suspicious about possible theft to hand over whatever info they have so that it can be investigated by someone with more knowledge on what to look for.  Maybe a mailbox that people can submit tips to, or some other interactive easy way.

These are just some of the ideas that I have and that others thought of today.  This must be an inclusive campaign that makes it easy for residents to participate in.  The freebie bloggers are vital to this campaign, the freebie community is a massive one and if we can educate freebie shoppers on what to look out for that will make a big difference.

Until content creators are given the legal protection they deserve, we as residents must do all we can to protect the people enrich our lives in SL.  Education is a powerful tool and we should use it.

I also plan on doing a whole show on content theft that will run on Treet TV.  If it werent for the designers out there I would have no show, so it’s the least I can do.  As bloggers, writers, artists, photographers, machinamists and shoppers ask yourself what you can do and let’s get it done!

Hunts seem to be an ongoing debate in the SL Fashion Circle of “Things to Kvetch About”.  (Google Kvetch if you don’t know what it means, I’m from Brooklyn so forgive me).

Aside from usually being too busy, the main reason why I never make it through an entire Hunt is because they are usually too damned Lagaliscious.  I also don’t have the patience to summon up the X-Ray vision that is sometimes required to find the hunt items that are the size of a grain of virtual sand.

So can someone tell me why it has to be a ‘Hunt’ in the first place? Hunts are used as an advertising tool by Designers to get new traffic to their shops with discounted or free samples of their line, in the hopes of adding new shoppers to their customer base. A Hunt is not necessary to achieve these goals, so why not just remove the hunt aspect all together? The fact that people share the specific SLURL locations of the items means that the whole search and find thing has lost it’s appeal and for the most part, people are not interested in looking around to find a hidden item.

So I propose a revamping of the Hunt concept. Why not just have Sample Sales?

Real life fashion designers have sample sales all the time so why can’t we bring that business concept into SL?

You can advertise a sample sale just for your shop alone, or you can advertise with several shops on a sim or across several sims, pretty much the same way a Hunt is advertised. Make it clear to shoppers what type of discount they can expect, whether it’s 100% free, one set low price, or a certain percentage off the ‘retail’ price of a specific item.  You will still achieve the same goals from a sample sale that you wish to achieve from a Hunt.

This brings the focus back to where it should be in the first place, your business!  The focus should not be on whether or not SLURLs should be given out. The focus should not be the frustration of endless group chats with everyone screaming “DOES HAS ANYONE KNOW WHERE #455 IS??”  The focus should not be on how fast a shopper can fly from shop to shop or TP from sim to sim to find your item. These are all distractions from the main business goal.

A sample sale can provide a calmer atmosphere where shoppers don’t feel like they have to kill each other or spend all day in IM’s trading coordinates.   And designers, if you dare, include a questionnaire notecard in the sample package asking for feedback on your item and on your shop. Ask shoppers if they enjoyed the overall experience and plan to return.  This is another way to keep shoppers engaged in your brand and focused on your business.

Just my two cents.  Let me know what you think.

This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Rebel Hope on Fabulous Fashion, and she premiered this beautiful dress.

Rebel said she was approached by Kimberly Mirabeau to design Ginger and Rebel has really outdone herself it is a gorgeous dress.
